Jamaica: Juvenile Killed At Children’s Home

A 17-year-old ward of the state has been killed at one of the country’s childcare facilities. The teen, whose name has not been released, died after being hit with a piece of iron by a 15-year-old ward.

The incident took place at the Manning Child Care Facility in Southfield, St Elizabeth.

Superintendent Samuel Morgan, the man in charge of the St Elizabeth Police Division, told THE STAR that the death resulted from a dispute on the football field.

“He used a piece of iron, swirling the iron, to hit him. The 17-year-old was taken to the Black River Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Morgan said.

The 15-year-old has since been charged, and is being housed at the Metcalfe Street Juvenile Centre.

The facility, operated by the Child Protection and Family Services Agency, is licensed to accommodate 60 boys between the ages of 10 to 18 years old. The facility comprises dormitories, classrooms, a computer lab, library, a playing field and a recreational hall.
